Satay House has served Malaysian food in Paddington since 1973, making it a longstanding part of London’s diverse restaurant landscape. Founded by Jaafar A. Shawal and Zaharah Hashim, the family owned restaurant began with a desire to share the flavours and hospitality of Malaysia with both the local Malaysian community and a wider audience. More than five decades later, that sense of heritage remains central to its identity.
The cooking reflects Malaysia’s rich blend of Malay, Chinese and Indian influences. Satay skewers arrive with peanut sauce, cucumber, rice cubes and onion, providing a clear introduction to the balance of savoury, sweet and aromatic flavours found across the menu. Starters such as gado gado, fried chicken wings and vegetable rolls encourage diners to order for the table and experience several contrasting tastes.
Rice, noodles and curries give the menu its depth. Nasi lemak pairs coconut rice with sambal, peanuts, anchovies and egg, while curry laksa combines noodles with a fragrant broth and a generous mixture of seafood, chicken, tofu and vegetables. Slow braised beef rendang, aromatic chicken curry and spicy fish curry show how coconut, lemongrass, chilli and other seasonings are layered to create warmth and complexity.
The dining room is relaxed and welcoming, supporting the Malaysian tradition of enjoying a meal together through shared dishes. Its location just off Praed Street is convenient for Paddington and Edgware Road stations, yet the restaurant feels removed from the busiest nearby roads.
